| Summary/Abstract |
Long before the first dazzling theorems of psychoanalysis were formulated, Edvard Munch (1863-1944), the great Norwegian painter, became the pioneer of an art which discovered and depicted the inner conflicts of modern man. The initiator of the movement known as Expressionism, Munch early found a home within Bohemian society in Oslo and Berlin where his work was initially greeted with incomprehension and abuse, but later he achieved recognition in artistic circles and became the leader of the new art.
