Baaa / Macaulay, David 1985  Book
Macaulay, David Book
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication Boston, Houghton Mifflin Company, 1985.
Description 64pGrey Spine
Summary/Abstract After the last person has gone from the earth, sheep take over the world, make the same mistakes as man, and eventually they too disappear. This dystopian novel looks at sheep living human lives. It follows the history of humans from the caves to the industrial age except this occurs with sheep after all humans have died off. It does a great job illustrating the impact that humans have had on themselves and their environment while also showing the brutality and gruesome nature of industry. Though this book is easy to read, it seems to be written for an older audience because the ideas are mature and gruesome. A discussion could be derived from reading this book as it might get people into reading dystopian novels and thinking about the human effect on the world. This might get students into becoming advocates for some cause.

Cambridge historical encyclopedia of Great Britain and Ireland / Haigh, Christopher (ed.) 1985  Book
Haigh, Christopher (ed.) Book
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Edition 2000
Publication New York, Cambridge University Press, 1985.
Description 392pGrey spine
Summary/Abstract The history of Britain and Ireland is traditionally presented as a succession of dramatic changes, but in this reference work the reader will find instead an emphasis on the patterns of continuity. The sixty contributors have concerned themselves with political structures and social and economic forces, rather than with the highlights of ancient chronicles and more recent upheavals. The familiar outlines and landmarks of the past nevertheless remain: the Encyclopedia consists of seven chronological sections from prehistory to the present decade, completed by a biographical Who's Who. Each section is introduced with a survey or Overview describing the major features and trends of the period. Specialist articles follow, which interpret developments in the context of each of the following topics: Government and Politics; Warfare and International Relations; Economy, Society (including living conditions); Culture (including education). The interpretative articles are illustrated not only with specific visual records, buildings and portraiture, but also with representations of dress, housing, transport, and everyday objects, intended to give the reader as vivid a feeling as possible for each period consulted. Maps and genealogies are included wherever they are helpful.
