Summary/Abstract |
Alan Gardner reminds us that the true function of the storytelling phrase, 'once upon a time' is to transport the reader or listener to a universal time. This time beyond time belongs to one in particular and is therefore universal. This is the time of the folktale. Gardner has retold three folktales in a text that brings them to fresh life. These stories also represent three different types of cumulative tales that are seen in many cultures around the world.
