Summary/Abstract |
Until his death in 1999, Jacques Lecoq taught indefatigably at his International Theatre School, which he founded in 1956. Here, translated for the first time into English, Lecoq shares his unique philosophy and teaching methods, which together form one of the greatest influences on contemporary international theatre. Neutral mask, character masks and counter-masks, bouffons, acrobatics, commedia, clowns; all the famous Lecoq techniques are included - techniques that have made their way into the work of former collaborators and students such as Dario Fo, Ariane Mnouchkine, Julie Taymor, and Theatre de Complicite.

Summary/Abstract |
This is an examination of Lecoq's philosophy of human movement, and the way it takes expressive form in a range of performance traditions. He traces the history of pantomime, sets out his definition of the components of the art of mime, and discusses the explosion of physical theatre in the 20th century.
