|
Summary/Abstract |
Faecal Attraction is the latest film from CSE which is about the absurd relationship between rich people's shit and poor people's water. Most rivers in India have turned into sewage canals. The stretches passing through cities are the worst off. What the urban middle class is most bothered about is the lost beauty of these rivers. So urban authorities evict poor people living in 'illegal' shanties by the rivers or they build expensive sewage treatment plants to clean the rivers. But nothing works. This comes at a cost. Poor people get very little water, mostly unsafe, and pay more for it in the bargain. They do not get sanitation cover and pay a heavy price in terms of health.

Summary/Abstract |
Irena Salina's award-winning documentary examines the conflict of the global water crisis. Most of us turn on the tap, and expect it to flow: water. But in our changing world, water has become one of the hottest commodities, an international business to the tune of $425 billion a year and growing, at the cost of human rights and ecological good sense. Scientists and activists reveal the extent of the damage so far. Our world is becoming a place where corporate interests take ownership of the very substance that sustains all life. Is water for people, or for profit? Best Documentary winner of the 2008 Vail Film Festival, and nominated for the 2008 Sundance Jury Prize.

Exploring the ocean
|
Summary/Abstract |
Uses of the Ocean traces humankind's dependence on oceans through the ages, looking back to the earliest explorers and examining the surprising ways we use the sea in everyday life. Humans have harnessed the power of the sea for transportation, fishing, mining, and tidal power and seen fantastic developments - as well as tragic disasters. This volume investigates myths about the ocean, our desire to explore and improve, and asks what damage human exploration is having on the oceans.Uses of the Ocean has answers to questions such as:
* Who were Jason and the Argonauts?
* What ocean did Vasco Da Gama explore?
* What happens when an oil tanker spills into the ocean?

Excerpts from experts
|
Summary/Abstract |
We could not live without water. Almost two-thirds of our body weight is water. We rely on it to keep ourselves clean, to keep our bodies nourished, and to get rid of waste. But water can also carry deadly germs and poisons. One of the greatest challenges for scientists and governments today is to make sure that everyone has access to the clean, safe water that they need.
