Publication Calcutta, Seagull Books, 2006.
Description xii, 92pBlack Spine
Summary/Abstract More than 50 years after "Agra Bazaar" was first staged by Habib Tanvir, theatre lovers in Agra say the play was a faithful chronicle of times past and the city should build a fitting memorial to the director who died June 8. Tanvir, who died in Bhopal at the age of 85, had scripted the play that catapulted him to the centre-stage of the Hindustani theatre movement, deftly weaving it around the writings of Mughal era "people's poet" Nazeer Akbarabadi.

Natyasastra: English translation with critical notes / Bharata Muni; Rangacharya, Adya(Tr.) 1984  Book
Bharata Muni Book
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication New Delhi, Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers, 1984.
Description xxv, 391pGreen spine
Summary/Abstract The Natyasastra purports to be a treatise on Hindu dramaturgy and histrionics, whose authorship is ascribed to Bharata-Muni, who is universally acknowledged to be legendary. The Natyasastra is acknowledged to be the first Sanskrit work on dramaturgy. The treatise says that Bharata was the one who popularized the Natyaveda, created by Brahma, on the earth. He is also said to have collected all the material of earlier acharyas (ancient teachers) like Tumburu, Narada and Nandi and gave the Nayashastra a complete coherence by making additions, alterations and adaptations according to the requirements of time and space. It is clear from the text that later it was the sons and the followers of Bharata who transmitted the art of the theater to the world. Abhinava Gupta uses the name ̧Adi-Bharata for Bharata as the sons and the followers of Bharata were called Bharatas, the actors.

The second section includes entries on specific forms and genres, as well as on topics such as street theatre, music, and Tagore's dramatic oeuvre. 'Theatre' in this volume is defined as any form that contains theatre's fundamental element, acting. Importantly, the entries are accompanied by photographs of performances that allow us to view the 'visual-ness' of India's performance forms.
