Refugee diary
|
Summary/Abstract |
This book focuses on a Kurdish family from northern Iraq. Mohammed, who was born in 1994, briefly explains some of the early problems during the Saddam Hussein years when his parents were arrested and jailed several times. The family was beaten in 2000 and Mohammed's father was taken away. No one knows what happened to him. Shortly thereafter, Mohammed and his mother escaped with other refugees and ultimately found their way to safety in England. The first page of this book has a clear map showing the family's route. This is a difficult story with a fairly happy ending.

|
Summary/Abstract |
Every day we make decisions that are underpinned by our ideas of what is right and wrong. But where do these ideas come from? Where do our values come from and who decides which values are used in a society? This book looks at topics that are strongly connected to the values people hold and their ideas of right and wrong, such as democracy, justice, fairness, prejudice and discrimination, education, climate change and war. There are contributions from Laura Bates, Richard Rieser, Tulip Siddiq and Alex Wheatle, who, along with the authors, discuss how their ideas of what is right and wrong have been shaped by their life experiences. Readers are encouraged to think for themselves about the issues discussed and decide which values are important to them.

Summary/Abstract |
Every day in the news we see and hear people described as refugees, asylum seekers and migrants leaving their homes and taking difficult, sometimes life-threatening journeys to new countries. What has made them leave, and what should the countries that receive them do about the situation? What links us all as human beings, and what happens when people are denied their human rights? In this book, we'll help you to understand migration, the movement of people, in all its forms. Our aim is to get you to think for yourselves about the big questions raised by the subject, and then use your answers to make your own list of human rights that you think all people should share. We'll hear a range of views from people who have personal experience of migration, including the campaigners Meltem Avcil and Muzoon Almellehan, the comedian and actor Omid Djalili and the poet Benjamin Zephaniah.
