Summary/Abstract The term appeasement can be used to describe a country's attempt to use diplomacy to reduce the number of its potential enemies. This is what the politicians of the 1930s were trying to do. Appeasement was not a single policy. It was widely accepted in the 1930s that Britain could not afford to take on all three of her potential enemies simultaneously as well as meet her obligations to the League of Nations. Decision making during each crisis involved decisions about strategic priorities and economic policy as well as diplomacy.
