Summary/Abstract |
Often called the Father of Modern Painting, Paul Cezanne supported the freedom of his Impressionist contemporaries, but distracted himself from any artistic school. He developed a singular and sumptuous painterly style that recalled masters from the past and presaged art movements to come. This volume features 140 full-colour reproductions of his paintings.

Summary/Abstract |
Corot has been considered many things: a precursor of Impressionism, with his sophisticated plays of light; a romantic for his lyrical landscapes; a realist, since he painted directly from nature. His devotion to nature brought him close to the Realists, and his sensitive studies of light and shade, often painted in the open air, and the freedom of his brushwork has a marked influence on the Impressonists. There is more to Corot than landscape - his poetic evocation of classical myth, the sensuos charm of his portraits of women and his dream-like vision of women. This study of Corot includes extracts from journals and newpapers.

Summary/Abstract |
Steady, industrious work and a constant seeking and reevaluation of his remarkable art marked Henri Matisse's long life and career. His continued struggles with self-expression gave to the world, over some six decades, a wealth of new visions in line, color, and form. With the exception of Pablo Picasso, no other artist has so profoundly and single-handedly influenced the direction of modern art. This volume celebrates the life and work of this extraordinary artist with 98 full-color and archival illustrations.
