When the Vikings captured York in 866, it was already a busy merchant town. The Vikings built farms, workshops and wharves on the river bank where ships could unload goods. Many craftsmen produced things from everyday objects to rare and expensive items for the busy market. To Viking York, or Jorvik, came merchants from Ireland, Scandinavia, Germany and beyond. Soon it became the most important Viking town in England.
