Summary/Abstract |
Discover how humans created their world from the objects they left behind from the US Constitution to the first iPhone, in DK's latest history book. From the beginning of human history, the one thing that has defined us is our talent for making things, from basic technology and everyday objects, such as bowls and hand axes, to high-tech inventions, such as supersonic aircraft, smart devices, and Mars rovers. Objects speak volumes about a civilization, telling us how our ancestors lived, as well as what they believed in and valued. A bronze cat mummy shows us how highly the ancient Egyptians valued their feline companions, while a mechanical tiger toy tells the story of rising tensions between an Indian sultan and European colonisers. With stunning, specially commissioned photography, Civilization shows you the objects that our ancestors treasured from the jewellery worn by the Mesopotamians to the prized ritual vessels used by the people of the Shang dynasty and gives you an insight into what gave each culture its own identity. From astrolabes and aeroplanes to vacuum cleaners and X-rays, DK uses its hallmark visual style to weave the extraordinary legacy of our creativity into a unique view of world history that will change the way you see the objects all around us.

Summary/Abstract |
'Glimpses of the World History' is an account of the progress of the world through centuries and ages. This book is a collection of letters that Jawaharlal Nehru wrote to his daughter Indira when he was in various Indian prisons for three years. The letters were meant to introduce her to the world and its history. In the first few letters, Nehru expresses his sadness for not being able to be around his daughter and give her the materialistic gifts that other parents could but he promises to give her a gift that he could afford; in the form of knowledge and wisdom through words that come from the very core of his heart. Nehru wrote 196 letters and covered the history of mankind from 6000 BC to the time he was writing the letters.

Summary/Abstract |
From the wooden horse at Troy to a harrowing photograph snapped in Vietnam, from Robert E. Lee's lost battle plans to the evacuation of Dunkirk, world history has been shaped as much by chance and error as by courage and heroism. Time and again, invincible armies fall to weaker opponents in the face of impossible odds, when the outcome had seemed a foregone conclusion. How and why does this happen? What is it that decides the fate of battle?Writes with the style and flair that has made him an award-winning war correspondent, In military terms, the incident which can swing a battle from victory to defeat in a moment is known as the "Hinge Factor". This text describes battles which demonstrate this phenomenon - from the circumstances behind the loss of the Holy Cross to the Star-War weaponry described in the Gulf War.

Summary/Abstract |
Andrew Marr, author of two bestselling histories of Great Britain now turns his attention to the world as a whole. A New History of the World takes readers from the Mayans to Mongolia, from the kingdom of Benin to the court of the Jagiellonian kings of Poland. Traditional histories of this kind have tended to be Euro-centric, telling mankind's story through tales of Greece and Rome and the crowned heads of Europe's oldest monarchies. Here, Marr widens the lens, concentrating as much, if not more on the Americas, Africa and Asia. Instead of focusing on one episode of history taking place in one place, he draws surprising parallels and makes fascinating connections, focusing on a key incident or episode to tell a larger story: for instance, the liberation of the serfs in Russia, which took place at the same time as the American Civil War, which resulted in the abolition of slavery in the US. But he begins the account with an episode in the life of Tolstoy, who racked up huge gambling debts and had to sell land and slaves as a result.

Summary/Abstract |
Imagine if you could condense all 3.5 billion years of life on Earth into just one hour. If you did, the dinosaurs wouldn't show up until 56 minutes into the hour and they'd be gone three minutes later. Modern humans (the ones we are related to) would amble into view at the very end of the hour, with just 0.2 seconds to spare. This amazing title introduces readers to things that are simply too big to grasp. By scaling them down, the author bring them into focus. Besides being a useful too to engineers and architects, scale is an important part of numeracy. Here big ideas and issues are scaled down into something more meaningful.
