History of Britain

Summary/Abstract |
On 7 September 1533, Anne Boleyn, the new wife of Henry VIII, gave birth to a baby girl. Henry was bitterly disappointed, for he believed that girls were not suitable to be rulers. The baby girl grew up to be Elizabeth I, the strongest and the cleverest of all the queens of England. During Elizabeth's reign, the country became peaceful and united after years of unrest, the Spanish Armada was defeated, trade and industry grew and the court became a centre for playwrights, artists and musicians.

Riding north to Scotland, Grandfather tells Will how his own father fought for Henry VIII at the battle of Flodden Field. Then, as now, there were fierce skirmishes on the Borders between the English and the Scots Reivers - cattle thieves. But neither of them realises what danger the handsome stranger is leading them into. Luckily, Meg, the quick-witted serving girl, steps in.

Summary/Abstract |
Will is a glover's son, fitting gloves to pretty hands in his father's busy shop, and apart from the odd poem he's never before put pen to paper. But people of Stratford require a play, and with his pal Adrian Croft he finds himself responsible for putting one on the stage. Will's imagination works overtime as he struggles to find parts for his motley selection of friends and neighbours: school boys who refuse to wear skirts, Adam of Muscovy, Wat the plasterer with a chip on his shoulder and many others. Thank goodness for trusty Adrian - a friend and director whose belief in their endeavours stands firm. Together they manage to assemble an unlikely company of amateurs - schoolboys and workmen. Fortune My Foe is the result, and Will hears the heady sound of applause for the first time.
