Summary/Abstract |
Mowgli wanders away from his village in India and is raised by a pack of wolves until he returns home and meets his mother, Messua. He knows nothing of human language or customs. His father was killed by a tiger, Shere Kahn. Mowgli learns how to speak and captivates Mahala, Budelo’s daughter, with tales of the jungle and his animal friends. While tracking Shere Kahn down to kill him, he and Mahala discover the remains of a lost civilization. When they return and tell of their find, Budelo wants Mowgli to reveal where the treasure is, but he refuses. Budelo convinces the villagers that Mowgli is an infidel and they sentence him to be burned at the stake, but he escapes into the jungle. A pack of villagers chase him, but all except Budelo die.
